Which is best engineering field?

Which is best engineering field?
There always is a lot of debate on this topic among students. In any engineering university, students from each branch of engineering try to show their faculty or engineering field to be superior on others. This is a hot topic of discussion among many friends during college years. I have no authority to give you a verdict about best engineering field. What I am going to do here is that I’ll try to make things more explainable to you guys. I’ll try my best to tell you how these engineering branches are coupled together.

Let’s start from the term “The Best”. How do you define the best? In my opinion, when students talk about being one discipline best, they do so based on few questions like:
  • What is the scope of this engineering degree?
  • What are job prospects after graduation?
  • What average starting salary is offered?
These three questions are the most common ones.

Scope of an engineering degree: I do agree here with the fact that some engineering fields have broader scope as compared to many other engineering fields. Does it really define the good or bad between the two? For example if we talk about scope of mechanical engineering and scope of architectural engineering. There is a lot of difference between the two. Mechanical engineering has a broader scope and more fields of application while architectural engineering is limited to a few job descriptions. Forget about mechanical engineering, in this age of science and technology, Software engineering has the highest scope. These are the guys which are required in all the industries. We are going towards automation and computer control. This makes software engineers a core element of each team. So based on these facts, can we assume that software engineering is the best branch of engineering? No we can’t! With due respect, all credit goes to architect engineers who design and build comfortable buildings, rooms and apartments for us all to live in and to work in.

Let’s discuss job prospects: If you are good in your field, I have never seen anyone who is capable and is jobless. Even those who are not capable, never remain jobless. Yeah it’s true that some engineers get more job opportunities than others. But in my personal opinion, it makes no difference. For example, if job opportunities are higher for mechanical engineers, students graduating with this degree are also higher in number as compared to other engineering fields. So jobs are highly competitive. You will only get one if you deserve one.

What average starting salary is offered to engineers: It differs from company to company, industry to industry and state to state. Even it depends on quality of your educational degrees and institutes. It also depends on nature of your job. Some management related jobs are high paid as compared to technical jobs. That’s why engineers prefer doing MBA. All engineers are almost paid at the same level in a same company and work environment.

So neither Scope, nor salary nor job prospects define “The best engineering field”. No discipline is good or bad. It’s you and your skills that are going to make real difference in future. So prepare to be the best in your field, in your class and in your batch. Learn all the engineering skills that you can. Get some professional certifications. Learn software that are required for engineers. To be the best, you have to work hard for it! That’s the only definition of being the best.

  1. Mechanical engineering is the best field of engineering. No matter what others say about it. But mechanical engineering is called the Mother of Engineering. Which means it gives birth to all other engineering disciplines.

As you see mother is the greatest and most powerful individual on Earth. So is mechanical. We ROCK.

    1. Well your explanation about mechanical engineering to be the best is kind of funny :) I am also a mechanical engineer by the way. But we cannot say that it's the best field of engineering just because we are doing this. Everything field of engineering is connected to other fields.

    2. its depend on your thinking and intrest
biochemical is also one of best field i have ever heard about it its all about genetics DNAand other organs

  2. Software engineering is the best course among all other courses in engineering. I have seen mechanical engineers graduating without jobs and many other engineers like Civil, Electrical and all others. But i have never seen any software engineer graduating without a job. This is a fact and you have to accept it.

Those who think mechanical is the best! They will regret after they graduate from their colleges with no jobs in hands.

    1. No one is going to regret about his degree if he studied with good grades. Yeah i agree there are many jobs for software engineers as compared to other engineers but that does not mean that software is the best field of engineering.

    2. is software engineering and computer engineering the same?this course is just a equivalent of computer science they just add it with engineering maths, you cannot make a software without the hardware and you cant make hardware's without machines and you cannot make machines without mechanical engineering its not about the jobs its about the role of mechanical engineering that makes it the mother of engineering you only base your conclusions with the nos. of jobless ME but you didn't think of the significant of ME to your profession.

    3. What actually the software people study....I have seen people from Mechanical Electrical Civil department got placed in Software job...Companies provide training and everyone is doing the same job..If it is the case why to waste studying software engineering...

  3. it does not matter which field is best or which has broader scope or which has strong history. I think engineering whole as a branch is great because in creating even a basic model or design you requires a team with people from all major branches. So its pointless to weigh the contribution of each branch as individual.. as it is all the branch together which brings the magic of engineering ..

  5. So long as there exists a need for power or physical movement of any kind, mechanical engineers will have job security. Granted it's probably not the same level of job security as a software engineer but it is an absolutely necessary field. Mechanical engineering will grow in importance as technology advances and our need for power increases.

  6. Well according to me every field is the best, it all depend on you that how you keep it, Just imagine if Bill Gates became a mechanical engineer were would he be standing. Well to be fair i have to select my field in next 2 months and i seriously got no clues about which field i should move in, i wanted to became a doctor but family pushed me in engineering, so a bit of guideline and suggestions will be nice. Thanks

  7. The word "engineering" itself contains word "Engine" which is definately a word of Mechanical engg. thus Mech is the mother of all engineering

  9. how about biotech?if one performs good in biotechnology from a good national engineering college then can we say he can get good job.which companies offe

  10. If as we see starting salary purpose we can prefer Marine Engineering but i am mechanical engineer so it is also best.

  11. mechanical has a broad career aspect, computer science has high demand with respect to the growing it industries, petroleum has a high salary bar.....while all the engineering degrees are equal it just depends on the student how he utilises his degree

  12. Mechanical Engineering for sure is number 1 no doubt
